It is a tribute to music for great cinema, the twelfth edition of the Concert for Milan, which returns to Piazza Duomo Sunday June 9, 2024 at 9.30pm, protagonists La Scala Philharmonic with the chief director Riccardo Chailly and the violinist (also conductor) Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.

The most iconic place in Milan will once again be transformed into a large stage under the stars for this extraordinary event, a now ritual appointment that the La Scala orchestra dedicates to the city. The Concerto per Milano attracts tens of thousands of spectators every year, winning the prize for the most attended free open air classical concert in Italy. Hundreds of thousands of spectators from all over the world are added to the attendance in Piazza Duomo, thanks to the live TV and radio on Rai5, Rai Radio 3 is Art.

The evening's program is marked by the combination of symphonic music and cinema, crossing songs and authors that have accompanied the history of the seventh art, from the Oscar Awards Nino Rota is John Williams, to Darius Milhaud is John Adams.

And the Concerto for Milan opens precisely with the creative energy of Adams and his musical enjoyment Lollapalooza “phenomenal, extraordinary thing” in American slang, to continue with the Suite from the ballet The boeuf sur le toit, “Cinematic fantasy on South American motifs” by Darius Milhaud, a triumph of carnival rhythms and colors on popular Brazilian themes that the composer would have liked as the soundtrack to a Charlie Chaplin film. Soloist in this piece proposed in the version for violin and orchestra will be Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, an internationally renowned violinist who since 2022 has dedicated himself exclusively to orchestral conducting and who in this capacity has just taken up residence in the city at the helm of the Milan Symphony Orchestra, of which he will become musical director in September 2024. The concert in Piazza Duomo it is a special occasion to see him once again as a soloist on the violin, a special gift for the Philharmonic and its audience after the success of the concerts conducted by Riccardo Chailly for the 2023 season.

The pages of. then return to the lecterns of the Philharmonic John Williams, legend of world cinema, won five Oscars and a record 54 nominations received: the famous composer, now 92 years old, will perform the famous Violin theme from Schindler's List, Adventures on Earth from ET the extra-terrestrial is Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra from Indiana Jones. In this great Milanese event the music of course cannot be missing Nino Rota, an author who represents a piece of global musical and cinematographic history: you will listen to the Suite and a selection of dance songs from The Leopard of Luchino Visconti.

This year too, thanks to Rai Cultura, the concert will be broadcast live in Italy on Rai 5 and RaiPlay - and live on radio on Rai Radio 3 and on the German WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln) - starting at 9.15 pm. Particular attention will be paid to the filming, with ten HD cameras and the use of two cameras on arms and overhead tracks which will make it possible to make the most of not only the music, but also the extraordinary scenery of Piazza Duomo. Around 70 people including technical and directorial staff will work on the filming. RaiCom distributes the concert in Europe through the Art Channel and in over 20 countries around the world including the Middle East, North Africa (MENA countries), Korea and China. The direction is entrusted to Stefania Grimaldi, the hosting to Elena Biggioggero.

In 2013, on the occasion of the Expo Days, which anticipated the 2015 universal exposition, Riccardo Chailly he had conducted music by Gershwin, with Stefano Bollani at the piano, in front of an audience of almost 50,000 spectators; in 2014 over 40,000 Milanese stayed to listen Esa-Pekka Salonen with the pianist LangLang, despite the pouring rain. In the year of the Expo, with Chailly on the podium and the performance of David Garrett, the concert in Piazza Duomo has become the most attended event of Milanese classical music. Subsequent editions brought the Argentine pianist to the stage with Riccardo Chailly Martha Argerich, the violinist Nikolai Znaider, the Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, while the special guest of the 2023 edition was the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez. The 2020 edition exceptionally took place in September, due to the Covid-19 emergency, with the title Concerto per l'Italia and the participation of the great violinist Maxim Vengerov. In the last few years Riccardo Chailly he has never missed his appointment with the city, each time designing evocative programmes, from great masterpieces inspired by Italian imagery to forays into Spanish music.
