He returns to Padua Homenaje, the International Classical Guitar Festival organized by Barco theater, with the artistic direction of Giacomo Susani: the third edition of the festival will take place from 8 to 16 September 2023 and will host some of the most important performers, scholars, composers and master luthiers for an intense week of events dedicated to this splendid instrument.

A tribute to the classical guitar and its long tradition in the city of Padua, aimed not only at the world of 'experts', students and enthusiasts, but at the wider public of classical music lovers, and all those who are curious to get to know new repertoires, authors, performers and sounds and to live stimulating musical experiences in the city.

As in previous editions, the Festival Homenaje 2023 will connect musical and educational events, unfolding along three program lines, i concerts, the conferences and the masterclass. Four concerts, two in-depth meetings and more than 30 public masterclasses make up the rich book of events that will be hosted at Barco Theater and in the magnificent Hall of Giants.

The program

The concerts, two solo and two chamber, bring important names of international guitar playing to the stage, primarily the Spanish David Russell, among the most acclaimed artists on the international music scene and already protagonist of the first two editions of the Festival; he is entitled to Opening concert, L'September 8 (8 pm) at Hall of the Giants.

The Greek guitarist Antigoni Goni, who has performed in many prestigious locations and festivals around the world, will dedicate her recital to Mediterranean soundscapes: the appointment is at Barco Theater the September 13.

The American Jason Vieaux, in one of his rare appearances in Italy, will give a solo performance and a chamber ensemble with the Indigo Quartet, the September 10 at the Hall of the Giants; the program, Rope weaves, ranges from pieces by Bach and Boccherini to pieces by Pat Metheny and Giacomo Susani.

The September 12 to the Barco Theater it will be the turn of the Duo Bandini – Chiacchiaretta, guitar and bandoneon, who returns by popular demand to present the program Tango and Folia, dedicated to pieces by Piazzolla, Leo Brouwer and others.

Two conferences, the first, with the master luthier Gabriele Lodi, on Tuesday September 12 (10am) al Barco theater will address the topic of construction of the guitar between Spain and Italy in the 1900s, with the analysis and room testing of some historical instruments.

The second, Friday September 15 still at Barco Theater, will be dedicated to composer/performer relationship, to the relationship between creation and execution; Two important composers on the international contemporary scene will discuss the topic, such as Stephen Goss (regular guest of the Festival since the first edition and recipient of the commission for the piece for solo guitar of this edition) e Francesco Antonioni (author of the piece for guitar and piano commissioned in the last edition of the Festival); moderated by Giacomo Susani.

As in the previous edition, the Festival's concert guitarists will hold individual frontal lessons open to the public throughout the week at the Barco Teatro: the lessons are reserved for Festival members but it is possible to attend even as listeners.

At the end of the Festival there will be a concert by the students and the awarding of a scholarship to the most deserving.

There is more

“In the 1970s, the Paduan guitarist Paolo Muggia, the first classical guitar teacher at the city Conservatory and himself the promoter of the establishment of a chair of the instrument in Italian Conservatories, with the establishment of the “Veneto Guitar Center” gave life to a an unmissable event for experts and lovers of classical guitar at an international level; Internationally renowned guitarists passed through the Hall of Giants (Julian Bream, Alirio Diaz among others) and Padua became a very important crossroads for the musical culture linked to this instrument.

Over time this centrality has been lost: Barco Teatro with Festival Homenaje re-proposes the historic vocation of the city in this particular cultural and musical sphere. This is the main meaning of the Festival's title: “Homenaje” (homage, in Spanish), a tribute to the classical guitar instrument and its tradition in the city.”
