On 21 March, the day of Johann Sebastian Bach's birth (1685) and early spring, on the initiative of REMA, the European Network of Early Music, the International Early Music Day is celebrated.
DAY OF ANCIENT MUSIC The European Day of Early Music / Early Music Day was launched in 2013 by REMA (Réseau Européen de Musique Ancienne) a network of organizations and institutions dealing with early music, established in 2000 in Ambronay, today based operating at the Center de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Currently 98 early music organizations from over 20 European countries are members. Since then, every year on 21 March, the day of Johann Sebastian Bach's birth (1685) and the beginning of spring, the consortium coordinates an international day of concerts and events that take place simultaneously in different countries, to celebrate and spread the immense heritage of the ancient music. Early music is an important part of the European cultural heritage, closely linked to other artistic expressions such as dance, theater and architecture. Several repertoires and composers have come out of the shadows and are also known by a wider audience, thanks to the research work and the interest of numerous musicians from all over Europe, but much is still to be rediscovered. In the intent of the organizers, the goal of the Early Music Day is precisely to raise awareness and knowledge of a vast and widespread heritage throughout Europe. In the meaning given by the REMA, the term Musique ancienne covers more than a millennium, from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. Also common in Anglo-Saxon terminology (Early Music), therefore embraces a longer period of time than what is generally understood by the Italian equivalent 'ancient music'. From this year the REMA has chosen to call the celebration simply Ancient Music Day / Early Music Day to underline that participation in the event embraces a geographical space that goes far beyond the borders of Europe, involving proposals coming from different continents. .
