The Teatro alla Scala in Milan was inaugurated on 3 August 1778, after having been built in two years on the orders of Empress Maria Teresa of Austria. It stands in the place where once there was the church of Santa Maria della Scala and was inaugurated with Antonio Salieri's work, “L'Europa Ricovata”.

Throughout its history, the theater has undergone several transformations. Originally, it was a place of entertainment for the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie, where gambling and parties also took place. Over time, it has evolved into a major cultural institution, hosting artists such as Verdi, Puccini, Toscanini, and Maria Callas.

During the fascist period, the theater underwent further changes, including the first mobile bridge stage. It was severely damaged during the Second World War but was quickly rebuilt and reopened in 1946 with a symbolic performance of Rossini's “La Gazza Ladra”, conducted by Toscanini.

In the following decades, the theater continued to adapt to social and political changes, from the youth protests of 1968 to international tours. It remains one of the most important cultural institutions in the world.
