Stauffer Foundation
The Stauffer Foundation is one of the main Italian private institutions for the promotion of musical culture.

The Stauffer Foundation was founded in 1970 in Cremona by the will of the Italian-Swiss patron and entrepreneur Walter Stauffer, the Foundation has the purpose of promoting and supporting advanced musical training for stringed instrumentalists, the teaching of traditional Cremonese lutherie and the musicological research.

In 1985, the Foundation established the Stauffer Academy, an ambitious educational project to support future generations of musicians, to whose creation some of the most authoritative Italian Maestros contributed: Salvatore Accardo (violin), Bruno Giuranna (viola), Rocco Filippini (cello), Franco Petracchi (double bass).

The Foundation owns a collection of historical instruments of particular value, exhibited on loan at the Cremona Violin Museum, including a Guarneri del Gesù violin, an Enrico Ceruti violin, a Girolamo Amati viola and an Antonio Stradivari cello.

Ernst Walter Stauffer was born on 7 January 1887 to parents of Swiss nationality.

Although born in Italy, in Sesto Cremonese, Walter Stauffer always wanted to keep his Swiss citizenship.

Although he was very attached to his native Bern, where he later died on 26 February 1974, he passionately loved Cremona, his adopted city, where he lived almost all year round and where he carried out his industrial and commercial activity in the dairy sector all his life .

On 19 October 1970 he established the Stauffer Foundation, calling it the "Walter Stauffer Center of Musicology", with the aim of promoting the teaching of classical violin making, stringed instruments, the history of music and musicology. Walter Stauffer, who on his death named the Foundation universal heir, recalled that Cremona had given birth not only to great luthiers, such as Stradivari, Amati, Guarneri del Gesù, but also to a great musician such as Claudio Monteverdi.
