Petruzzelli Opera Symphonic Foundation and Bari Theaters
The Petruzzelli Symphonic Opera Foundation and Bari Theaters is the fourteenth Italian opera body, established by state law in 2003. It manages the Petruzzelli Theater, taking care of its programming which is characterized by the search for a balance between tradition and innovation and the desire to open up to contemporaneity

Season

The Petruzzelli Theater, fourth largest in Italy, came inaugurated in 1903 and owes its name to the builders, the brothers Onofrio and Antonio Petruzzelli. Remarkable for its capacity (about 2,200 seats), and highly advanced technological equipment for the time (heating and electric light), from the first seasons it hosted great artists, with a program that in addition to opera included ballets, concerts and other kinds of entertainment.

At the end of the 2nd World War, when Bari became the seat of the allied forces, the Petruzzelli was occupied by theAnglo-American army who organized you concerts for their own troops, even with renowned artists such as Bing Crosby.

Over the years great singers such as Beniamino Gigli, Albanian Opera, Mario Del Monaco, Alfredo Kraus, Renata Tebaldi, Tito Schipa, and in more recent years, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Katia Ricciarelli, Rajna Kabaivanska, Piero Cappuccilli, Cecilia Gasdia; dance stars such as Rudolph Nureyev is Margot Fonteyn, large ballet companies including those of Maurice Béjart is Roland Petit, directors like von Karajan is Riccardo Muti, directors such as Luca Ronconi is Pier Luigi Pizzi, and many others. On the stage of the Bari theater, lyrical events of international importance, but also great ones, alternated pop music concerts is theater show; the Petruzzelli was also the set of the movie 'Stardust'with Alberto Sordi is Monica Vitti.

In 1973 in recognition of the high quality of the activity carried out until then, Petruzzelli was declared "Theater of tradition".

In the night between 26 and October 27, 1991 the theater was devastated by a very violent arson and only the collapse of the dome, suffocating the flames, prevented its destruction. The last opera represented was the Norma.

The artistic life of the Apulian capital was irreparably damaged for many years. In fact, intricate legal events followed, several 'stop and go' of the reconstruction works, concluded only in 2009.

Finally, the December 6, 2009, with the official closure of the construction site, the theater was returned in Bari and Puglia completely rebuilt, exactly as it was in its fundamental spaces, but with avant-garde structures from the point of view of safety and technologies The artistic-cultural activity of the Foundation thus found its natural stage up to the most recent successes
