Tuscan Festival 2024 | III edition • Parma
Dedicated to the legendary conductor, his favorite authors and the composers of his time, this year's Festival presents nine concerts and a round table; grand finale in Piazza Duomo with the Filarmonica Toscanini conducted by Kent Nagano

From 4 June to 11 July 2024 is renewed a Parma the appointment with the Toscanini Festival: arrived at third edition, it is already an eagerly awaited event that has attracted the attention of enthusiasts. The Festival pays homage to the figure and role of in his hometown Arturo Toscanini, delving into his favorite authors and the composers of his time, and explores with particular attention the repertoire of those decades between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which were wrongly rarely visited and yet to be discovered.

Organized by the Toscanini Foundation, this year the Festival offers four symphony concerts, four chamber concerts, a round table and a Community concert, all hosted in various places in Parma.

Among the artists, prominent names such as Kent Nagano who will go up to the podium for the grand finale in Piazza Duomo, the star of the violin Francesca Dego, the cellist Silvia Chiesa, in duo with the support of the Philharmonic Michaela Costea, and also the appreciated Korean pianist Jae Hong Park and the young director Vitali Alekseenok, winner of the 2022 Toscanini Competition.

«Combining young winners of prestigious international competitions with well-known musicians, approaching the great repertoire of the early twentieth century in Italy alongside the masterpieces of the late 19th century, and listening to refined chamber music, together with musical fairy tales: this is the plot of the Festival Toscanini 2024 – explains the Superintendent and Artistic Director of La Toscanini Ruben Jais -. The Festival also offers the possibility of enjoying significant places in our city: from Piazza San Francesco to Piazza Duomo, then the Shakespeare Arena of the Teatro Due and Parco della Musica. A worthy conclusion to this stimulating musical journey is a round table on the relationship between Richard Wagner and Arturo Toscanini, followed by a concert directed by Kent Nagano entirely dedicated to the music of the great German opera composer.»

The program

At the opening of the Festival, the first four concerts are mirrored, linked two by two by the same soloist, interpreter of a symphonic and a chamber music event. In the first, the June 4th at the CPM Toscanini, the formidable pianist will play Jae Hong Park, born in 1999, winner of the 2021 Ferruccio Busoni Competition. Already a popular performer together with the Toscanini Filarmonica, the Korean pianist in his recital will perform the 24 Preludes op. 11 and the Fantasy in B minor op. 28 by Scriabin together with the Sonata n. 1 by Rachmaninov, while the June 6, in Piazzale San Francesco, will be soloist in Concerto n. 2 by Camille Saint-Saëns with the Toscanini Philharmonic led by the Belarusian Vitali Alekseenok winner of the Toscanini Competition in 2022; also on the program is Symphony n. 7 by Beethoven and the Overture from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn. Soloist of the next two events dedicated to Busoni and Respighi, she is the highly appreciated violinist Francesca Dego,  first Italian to enter the final of the Paganini Prize in Genoa: the June 12th at the CPM La Toscanini, accompanied by Francesca Leonardi will perform in the Sonata n. 2 by Busoni and in Respighi's Sonata in B minor, while the June 14 will be directed by Francis Cilluffo at the Shakespeare Arena of the Teatro Due in an evening that includes the Botticellian Triptych and the Birds Suite by the Bolognese composer, as well as the Concerto in D major by Busoni, whose centenary of death is commemorated this year. The Festival continues on June 21st with a special concert for the Music Festival, evening in collaboration with the Municipality of Parma at the Parco della Musica: Elena Casella he conducts a program of well-known and loved music, which combines Mozart's Symphony n.40 and Symphony n. 5 by Beethoven.

Followed by two chamber concerts at the Casa della Musica: the June 26 the supporter of the Filarmonica Toscanini will be on stage, Michaela Costea which together with Silvia Chiesa on the cello he will perform the Duo op. 7Z by Zoltán Kodály and the Sonata op. 148 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The other chamber concert of July 3 it is instead a recital by the Venetian pianist Elia Cecino, born in 2001, last year's winner of the ITurbi Competition in Valencia which he will perform in Brahms' Sonata n. 1, Janàček Sonata IX 1905 Z Ulice (In the Street) and Prokofiev Sonata n. 7 op. 83.

The 2nd of July at the Sala Gavazzeni it is the turn of Community concert to which the Summer Centers of the Municipality of Parma are invited: on the program Pierino and the Wolf by Prokofiev with the Toscanini Philharmonic directed by Julius Arnofi and the narrative voice of Stefania Panighini.

Big final eventJuly 11 in the magnificent scenery of Piazza Duomo, with an entirely Wagnerian evening directed by Kent Nagano and the participation of the contralto Gerhild Romberger: the concert is inspired by the legendary Tuscan programs which remain in the history of Wagnerian interpretation: in particular the reference goes to the Maestro's last concert held at Carnegie Hall 70 years ago: 4 April 1954.

On the topic, as a corollary to the concert in Nagano, a round table will take place on 11 July at 5.30 pm at the APE Auditorium (Parma Museum), led by Enrico Girardi.
