Caracalla Festival
The summer opera season of the Rome Opera in the majestic setting of the Baths of Caracalla (217 AD), is one of the most famous and appreciated en plein air opera festivals, of great attraction also for international tourism. The first opera season in Caracalla took place in 1937, and after a suspension due to the massive restoration of the archaeological site, since 2001 the summer bill of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma has returned to its historic location.

If famous singers, world-famous conductors and dance étoiles have passed on the stage of Caracalla, contributing to the characteristic majesty of outdoor productions, they have often also been called large and small animals, unwitting actors capable of surprising the spectators. Contrary to what we hear every summer, on the stage of the ancient baths elephants never went up, but was trodden by camels, horses and even lions.
