Offered a total of four times in the May Seasons and on tour in Tokyo in 2001 is 2006, the Turandot designed by Zhang Yimou thanks to its sensational success in 1998 could be represented in the place where the story is set, in the legendary one Forbidden City of Beijing, until then never granted for live performances.

And for the first Turandot he directed at the Maggio in 1997, it was Zubin Metha who wanted Zhang Yimou to direct, who made his opera debut on that occasion.

Turandot, opera In three acts and five scenes with a libretto by Giuseppe Adami is Renato Simoni, last unfinished masterpiece of Giacomo Puccini, is based on the five-act stage fairy tale of the same name by Carlo Goiters (Venice, Teatro San Samuele, 22 January 1762), in turn inspired by the collection of "Persian tales" Les Milles et un jour (1710 – 12) by the French orientalist François Pétis de la Croix.

As is known, Puccini did not complete his Turandot, the finale of which he was still working on when he died in Brussels on 29 November 1924. The publisher Ricordi and Arturo Toscanini entrusted the drafting of the last scenes of the opera to Franco Alfano. Turandot made its posthumous debut at the Milan staircase on April 25th 1926 under the direction of Toscanini himself, who however chose to interrupt the performance halfway through the third act, immediately after the last page completed by Puccini, addressing the audience with the famous phrase: «Here Giacomo Puccini died»

Three years later, in 1929, the opera arrived at the Maggio Fiorentino, where it was staged eleven times.
