Falstaff, lyrical comedy in three acts on a libretto by Arrigo Boito, closes the extraordinary opera parable of Joseph greens. Composed at the age of eighty (except A day of reign, sensational juvenile fiasco of 1840), is the only comic work and, at the same time, the last opera in Verdi's vast production.

Falstaff was first performed at the Milan staircase the February 9th 1893, under the direction of Edoardo Mascheroni, in the presence of a public photo from great occasions – in the hall sat among others Pietro Mascagni, Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Giacosa, Giosuè Carducci, Giovanni Boldini, Letizia Bonaparte.

Success was triumphant, and Verdi had finally realized his long-pursued dream of writing a comic opera. After having transposed the passions and torments of the human soul into music for more than fifty years, the composer from Busseto took leave of the stage and the world with a smile born of profound wisdom, entrusted to the famous final line: "Everything in the world is a joke. Man was born a joker".
