The UNESCO Islands of Tuscany Reserve, established in 2003, is made up of the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago (Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri) and some islets between the Tuscan coast and Corsica.

It therefore includes the Tuscan Archipelago National Park (the largest marine park in the Mediterranean), 15 sites of the Natura 2000 network including Sites of Community Interest and Special Protection Areas and part of the International Marine Mammal Sanctuary of the Mediterranean.

Three islands Capraia, Gorgona and Pianosa became penitentiary islands in the 19th century. Subsequently the penal institutions of Capraia and Pianosa were closed, but the limitations imposed on access and exploitation of the territory linked to the presence of the prison undoubtedly contributed to an exceptional conservation of the environment both on land and at sea, and to its variety.
