Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Presents

“ Season 2022/2023 ”
And the Don chisciotte choreographed by Laurent Hilaire, the ballet that the December 18 inaugurates the Dance season 2022/23 of the Rome Opera House: a classic title of the holiday season, based on the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes and set to music by the Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus (1826 - 1917).

The ballet will be staged for thirteen performances until 31 December 2022, with recitals also the Christmas Eve (11 am) and the day of new Year's Eve (6 pm).

Represented in Rome twice already with great success, the Don chisciotte by Hilaire, wanted for the inauguration by the director of the corps de ballet Eleonora Abbagnato, is now presented with a renewed set-up: for the first time you will be able to admire the elegant costumes designed by Francesco Zito and the sumptuous scenes signed by Zito with Antonella Conte, the lights curated by Vinicio Cheli. To get on the podium of theOrchestra of the Opera House will be the British director David Garforth, ballet repertoire specialist.

And in the roles of the two protagonists in love Kitri is Basilio – who are entrusted with all the liveliness, cheerfulness, vigor and romanticism of this version – two international stars will make their debut at the Costanzi, Isabella Boylston, principal of the American Ballet Theatre, e Osiel Gouneo, principal Cuban dancer of the Bayerisches Staatsballett; other prestigious international guests will be Ukraine Iana Salenko, principal dancer of the Staatsballett Berlin, e Daniel Camargo, principal of the American Ballet Theatre, who will dance together with the stars of the Rome Opera House.

The couple Isabella Boylston is Daniel Camargo will take the stage for the inauguration on December 18, returning to the scene in the repeats on December 20, 22 and 23 (at 8 pm), Iana Salenko is Osiel Gouneo will dance on 29 and 30 (at 20) December, Salenko will return to the stage with Alessio Rezza on December 27 and Osiel Gouneo with Rebecca Bianchi in the end-of-year performance, on December 31st at 6pm.

Space then for the stars of Costanzi, Rebecca Bianchi paired with Simone Agrò on 23 (15.00) and 28 December, Alessio Rezza together with the star Susanna Salvi on 21st (8pm), 24th (11am) and 30th December (3.00pm), Flavia Stocchi is Matthias Tortora, dancers of the corps de ballet for the matinee recital on 21 December (11.00).

It will be a Don Quixote without upheavals, but with an entirely modern lightness: "This version is the fruit of a long history that stems from the first debut of the Don chisciotte of Petipa staged at Bolshoi of Moscow in 1869 – explains the choreographer Laurent Hilaire, current director of the Bayerisches Staatsballet – Whoever has the task of reviving it now, in the present, must indeed express himself through the classical language, but without placing the show in the rigid prison of a code that takes away its breath and communicativeness. Tradition cannot be used as a dress that is too tight, preventing the work from identifying a fresh and contemporary theatricality”.

Particular attention is also paid to the music, performed by the Rome Opera Orchestra, and directed by David Garforth pointing to the original score. “The reference documentation for this edition of the Don chisciotte is the original manuscript score of Ludwig Minkus, currently performed in many of the world's leading companies, including the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow - explains Garforth - Some original musical pieces have been composed in the style of Minkus to provide the appropriate connections to the drama and choreography of the production”.
