Daniele Gatti at the helm of the Dresden Staatskapelle, the position until 2030
The Milanese director has signed the contract with the Minister of Culture of Saxony, Barbara Klepsch
It's official: Daniele Gatti will be next Principal Director of the Sächsische Staatskapelle in Dresden, among the oldest and most famous orchestras in the world. Gatti and the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Saxony, Barbara Klepsch, they signed the contract on 5 July 2023.

The Milanese maestro, chosen last year by the orchestra professors with a vote, will begin his long tenure on August 1, 2024, at the end of the commitment with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and will remain in office for six years, until July 31, 2030.

“Our new Principal Director is one of the best in the world” – commented the Minister Barbara Klepsch – 'will continue to raise the level of excellence of the Staatskapelle, preserving its sound and prestigious artistic heritage, while opening new horizons and programmatic developments" with the aim, continued the Minister, of captivating an audience with classical music increasingly large and diverse.

Daniele Gatti had first stood on the podium of the Staatskapelle Dresden in 2000 at the invitation of Giuseppe Sinopoli who was then the guide. "It was a musical understanding as I had rarely experienced, and the starting signal of an artistic relationship that has continued to intensify over the years, both in Dresden and on tours around the world - underlined the maestro -. Today I feel happy and deeply honored to accept this new position in one of the great European cities of music and to lead one of the oldest and most important orchestras in the world – and even more so in a venue like the Semperoper, where so many world renown have worked, from Richard Wagner onwards. I thank the great director and friend Christian Thiemann – whom I have known and admired for many years – for the great work he has done, hoping that he will continue to be close to this orchestra and that he will soon return to the podium as a guest".

Daniele Gatti will start his role together with Annekatrin Fojuth, who will be general director of the Orchestra from 2024, and with the designated Superintendent Nora Schmidt, who will take over the reins of the Semperoper starting from the 2024/25 season.
