“From the Sign, let's start together” - the 2021/22 Season of the San Carlo Theater in Naples
An extraordinary season to mark the restart

San Carlo Theater Foundation in Naples Presents

With a title inspired by musical notation and the desire to start again as a community, the one proposed by San Carlo Theater in Naples led by the Superintendent Stéphane Lissner: the new Season, from October 2021 to November 2022, includes 13 opera titles flanked by 2 opera performances, 4 ballets, 18 symphonic, choral and recital concerts, 10 chamber concerts, 7 appointments of the new Piano Festival.

We start with one double opening and two new productions: La Boheme of Giacomo Puccini directed by Emma Dante, director Juraj Valčuha, repêchage of the failed inauguration 2020/21, will be on stage from 12 to 19 October 2021.

The opening night of the 2021/22 Opera Season is scheduled on November 21 with Othello of Giuseppe Verdi directed by Michele Mariotti, directed by Mario Martone and the star Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.

The representations of Ballet they kick off the December 30th with The lake of Swans by Tchaikovsky in the version of Patrice Bart, for the first time at the Neapolitan Opera, starring the dance company of the San Carlo Theater directed by Clotilde Vayer, on the podium Benjamin Shwartz.

For the opening event of the Concert season the November 27, Michele Mariotti will direct theOrchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo and the pianist Alessandro Taverna.

An important novelty in music programming is the Piano Festival that the Teatro di San Carlo will launch in the spring. On the calendar from 22 April to 5 May 2022 includes 7 concerts with guests Daniel Barenboim, Yuja Wang, it's still Beatrice Rana, Alexandra Dovgan, Bertrand Chamayou, Rafal Blechacz is Benjamin Grosvenor.

To complete the program, another new review is added, the cycle of Chamber music entrusted to the Orchestra Professors of the Theater with one Sunday appointment a month starting from 7 November.

Finally, the realization of theBelcanto Academy with the direction of Mariella Devia and of Eighteenth-century Neapolitan school, with the courses officially starting in October 2021. The best students will be called to take part in the productions of the current season.


The Opera Season typeset great stars of the international opera scene, including several artists making their debut on the stage of the San Carlo.

Two are the opera performances, The three queens, dedicated to the final scenes of Donizetti's Tudor Trilogy, protagonist Sondra Radvanovsky (February 19 and 22) e 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, show of Marina Abramovic is Marko Nikodijević (13 - 15 May).

In detail:

La Boheme
La Boheme by Puccini in the new production of the Teatro San Carlo directed by Emma Dante, originally scheduled for the opening of Season 20/21, will be staged from 12 to 19 October 2021. On the podium, directing Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo the musical director Juraj Valčuha. In the main cast Selene Zanetti (Mimi), Benedetta Torre (Musetta), Stephen Costello (Rodolfo) and Andrzej Filonczyk (Marcello). The Choir is prepared by José Luis Basso, recently appointed, while the White Voices Chorus is directed by Stefania Rinaldi.

The November 21 with a Before Gala in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, the curtain will rise on the new one Opera Season 2021/22. On stage Othello, the penultimate opera by Giuseppe Verdi, in the new production of the Teatro di San Carlo co-produced with the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. On the podium Michele Mariotti to conduct Orchestra and Chorus of the Theater (prepared by José Luis Basso), with the direction entrusted to Mario Martone. The cast is important, with the tenor star Jonas Kaufmann in the role of Othello (alternating with Yusif Eyvazov), Maria Agresta in the part of Desdemona, Igor Golovatenko who will play Iago. They complete the cast Alessandro Liberatore (Cassius) Matteo Mezzaro (Rodrigo) Emanuele Cordaro (Ludovico) Biagio Pizzuti (Mountain), Manuela Custer (Emilia), Francesco Esposito (A herald). The show will run until December 14.

Lucia of Lammermoor
Second title on the bill, from 15 to 29 January 2022, And Lucia of Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, in the production of the Teatro di San Carlo signed by Gianni Amelio. On the podium Carlo Montanaro, Master of the Choir José Luis Basso. On stage Gabriele Viviani, Lord Enrico Ashton, Nadine Sierra protagonist in the role of Lucia di Lammermoor, Penis Pati in the role of Sir Edgardo of Ravenswood e Alexandros Stavrakakis in that of Raimondo Bidebent. The roles of Lord Arturo Bucklaw, Alisa and Normanno will be significantly interpreted by the students of the recently established Accademia di Canto del Teatro di San Carlo.

The Sonnambula
The January 30 a title that has been absent for 20 years from the sancarlian stage returns, The Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini, performed in concert form. At the helm of the theater teams, Lorenzo Passerini, Choir Master José Luis Basso. In the cast, Alexander Vinogradov as Rodolfo, Manuela Custer will be Teresa, Jessica Pratt Amina. Lawrence Brownlee, making his debut at the San Carlo, will play the role of Elvino, Valentina Varriale Lisa's.

To follow, a cornerstone of the repertoire with Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, on stage from 15 to 26 February 2022 with the sancarlian staging signed by Franco Dragone. Top-level cast with Anna Netrebko is Anna Pirozzi alternating in the title role, Yusif Eyvazov is Stefano La Glue in that of Radamès, Ekaterina Gubanova is Agnieszka Rehlis for Amneris. Amonasro will be played by Nicolas Testé, Ramfis from Franco Vassallo while Mattia Denti will be the King of Egypt and Riccardo Rados A messenger. Directs Michelangelo Mazza, for the first time at the San Carlo, Master of the Choir José Luis Basso.

The three queens
The opera show is scheduled for 19 and 22 February The three queens, protagonist the famous soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, who will play the final scenes of Gaetano Donizetti's Tudor Trilogy (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux), directs Riccardo Frizza.

So do all of them
From 23 March to 2 April come back So do all of them by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart directed by Chiara Muti, staging of the San Carlo made in co-production with the Vienna State Opera. Conducts Dan Ettinger, Choir Master José Luis Basso. On stage Mariangela Sicily (Fiordiligi), Serena Malfi (Dorabella), Alessio Arduini (Guglielmo), Giovanni Sala (Ferrando), Damiana Mizzi (Despina), Paolo Bordogna (Don Alfonso).

From April 20 to May 3 will go on stage Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, with Juraj Valčuha conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo, Master of the Choir José Luis Basso. The direction is by Eduardo De Angelis, the scenes are from Mimmo Paladino. Oksana Dyka is Floria Tosca, while Piero Pretti is Ildar Abdrazakov they debut in the roles of Mario Cavaradossi and Baron Scarpia respectively. They complete the cast Emanuele Cordaro (Cesare Angelotti), Sergio Vitale (The sexton) e Francesco Pittari (Spoletta). The Chorus of White Voices of the Teatro di San Carlo is directed by Stefania Rinaldi, the production is by the Teatro di San Carlo.

7 Deaths of Maria Callas
From 13 to 15 May the multimedia show of Marina Abramović is Marko Nikodijević 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, a co-production (born in times of pandemic between Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro di San Carlo, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Greek National Opera Athens, Liceu de Barcelona and Opéra National de Paris. On stage together with Marina Abramović there will be seven interpreters to give body and voice to the most famous opera heroines: Annalisa Stroppa (Carmen), Valeria Sepe (Floria Tosca), Nino Machaidze (Desdemona), Zuzana Marková (Lucia Asthon), Roberta Mantegna (Norma), Kristine Opolais (Cio-Cio-San), Selene Zanetti (Violetta Valery), directs Yoel Gamzou.

Yevgeny Onegin
From 15 to 26 June Fabio Luisi will conduct Orchestra and Chorus (prepared by José Luis Basso) in Yevgeny Onegin by Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij, in a production of the Komische Oper Berlin directed by Barrie Kosky. In the cast Elena Stikhina (Tat'jana), Artur Rucinski (Evgenij Onegin), Michael Fabiano (Lenskij),Monica Bacelli (Larina), Maria Barakova (Olga), Sara Mingardo (Philipp'evna), Alexander Tsymbalyuk (Prince Gremin), Gregory Bonfatti (Triquet).

The Barber of Seville
In the month of July, two other tried-and-tested Sancarlian productions will be re-proposed with new casts: from 6 to 16 July The Barber of Seville by Rossini directed by Filippo Crivelli, the scenes of Emanuele Luzzati and the costumes of Santuzza Calì. On the podium Riccardo Frizza, protagonists on stage Aleksandra Kurzak, Rosina, Xabier Anduaga (recently awarded as best young singer at the International Opera Awards 2021) as Conte di Almaviva, Carlo Lepore in the role of Don Bartolo e David Luciano in the role of Figaro.

The Traviata
From 22 to 31 July back on stage The Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi in the production of the Teatro di San Carlo signed by Ferzan Özpetek, with the teams of the Theater directed by Francesco Ivan Ciampa. To interpret Violetta Valéry will be in interesting alternation Pretty Yende is Pink Feola. They will share the role of Alfredo Germont Francesco Demuro is Yijie Shi, while Carlos Alvarez and Simone Del Savio will alternate in the part of Giorgio Germont.

The Puritans
After the August break, the bill restarts from 7 to 16 September with the long-awaited double debut of Lisette Oropesa, for the first time at the Lirico di Napoli and her role debut as Elvira in I puritans by Bellini. The production of the Teatro Real in Madrid is signed by Emilio Sagi. Samson et Dalila
At the end of the season, two titles from the repertoire from beyond the Alps: from 29 September to 9 October, Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns with Dan Ettinger to the direction of the Orchestra e José Luis Basso at the helm of the Chorus, directed by Damián Szifron, production of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Protagonists, Anita Rachvelishvili in the role of Dalila and the American tenor Brian Jadge in those of Samson, in his role debut. It's still, Ernesto Chest will be the high priest of Dagone, Gabriele Sagona Abimelech e Roberto Scandiuzzi An old Jew.

Tristan und Isolde
Closes the season, from 27 October to 5 November, Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner, directed by Lluìs Pasqual, winner of the 2004/2005 Abbiati prize for the sets and costumes by Ezio Frigerio is Franca Squarciapino. He directs the orchestra and choir Constantin Trinks, Choir Master José Luis Basso. As Tristan, Stuart Skelton, in that of King Marke of Cornwall René Pape, for the first time at the San Carlo. The 2021/2022 Ballet Season

Four titles are scheduled for a total of 39 performances, which will feature the Ballet of the Teatro di San Carlo directed by Clotilde Vayer. The Season starts on December 30th with a ballet classic, The lake of swans to music by Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij, with the choreography by Patrice Bart, for the first time at the San Carlo. The Theater Orchestra is conducted by Benjamin Shwartz, while Luisa Spinatelli signing sets and costumes. The staging is on stage until January 5, 2022.

The second date with dance, The Masters of the 20th century, contains two choreographies: Concert by Kennet MacMillan on the Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra by Dmitrij Šostakóvič e Theme and Variations of George Balanchine, conceived on the Suite for Orchestra n. 3 in G major op. 55 by Pëtr Il'ič Tchaikovsky. He directs the orchestra Hilari García. The show will be staged from 5 to 10 May.

From 22 to 28 May is on schedule Romeo and Juliet by Sergej Prokofiev for the famous choreography of Kenneth MacMillan. Scenes and costumes are by Paul Andrews, the production is by Birmingham Royal Ballet. He directs the orchestra Fleece Pähn.

The ballet program closes in September at the Politeama Theater, with the diptych composed by 5Tangos, ballet conceived and choreographed by Hans Van Manen with music by Astor Piazzolla, and In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, created by William Forsythe with music by Thom Willems.

The 2021/2022 Concert Season

The Concert Season of the Teatro di San Carlo includes 18 concerts including symphonic, choral and recital.

Saturday November 27 Michele Mariotti he will direct the Orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo and the pianist Alessandro Taverna for the inaugural concert. The Overture from Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber and the Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K 467 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op.92 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Again on the podium the December 3, Mariotti he will conduct the Symphony n. 1 in C major, op. 21 of Ludwig van Beethoven and Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, op. 38 of Robert Schumann.

The musical director Juraj Valčuha the December 12 he will lead the Orchestra in Little Night Music by Luigi Dallapiccola, Vier letze Lieder (Four last lieder) and Tod und Verklärung op.24 (Death and transfiguration) by Richard Strauss, soprano Lise Davidsen.

New commitment of Valčuha with the San Carlo Orchestra is that of December 18, 2021 with Suite n. 1 Op. 107 from Cinderella's Sergej Prokofiev, Ma mère l'oye di Maurice Ravel and Gloria, for soprano, choir and orchestra by Francis Poulenc. Choir Master José Luis Basso, soprano Lauren Michelle.

The 20 th January Henrik Nánási will direct the Strings Entertainment, BB 118, SZ 113 of Béla Bartók and the Symphony n. 3 in E flat major, op. 55 “Eroica” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

For the Remembrance day the January 27 the concert will be held at the Teatrino di Corte di Palazzo Reale The End Time - Four Lives in the Apocalypse by Görlitz. The quartet consisting of Gabriele Pieranunzi (violin), Gabriel Mirabassi (clarinet), Silvia Chiesa (cello) e Maurizio Baglini (piano), he will play the Quatuor pour la fin du Temps by Olivier Messiaen, score performed for the first time by the same author together with three other prisoners on January 15, 1941 in the German concentration camp of Görlitz. The April 9 Juraj Valčuha will again be on the podium to conduct the overture from Les Océanides by Jean Sibelius, Concerto for Trombone by James MacMillan, with the solo trombone Jörgen van Rijen and finally the Symphony n. 5 in C minor op. 67 of Ludwig van Beethoven.

The June 17, Choral Concert with the Chorus of the San Carlo Theater directed by José Luis Basso, in poster Vier Gesänge for women's choir, horns and harp, op. 17 and Liebeslieder-Walzer for choir and four-handed piano, op. 52 of Johannes Brahms and the Requiem version for choir and organ, op. 48 of Gabriel Fauré.

A two-day event entirely dedicated to Johannes Brahms will see protagonist Fabio Luisi on the podium of the Teatro di San Carlo Orchestra on Thursday 23 is Saturday June 25. Symphony n. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 and the Symphony no. 2 in D major, Op. 73 by the German composer and on Saturday 25 June the Symphony n. 3 in F major, Op.90 and the Symphony n. 4 in E minor, Op. 98.

The 10th of July Juraj Valčuha he will direct the Orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo and the pianist Javier Perianes in a program that includes Alborada del gracioso di Maurice Ravel, Noches en los Jardines de España for piano and orchestra by Manuel de Falla, and in closing two passages by Ottorino Respighi, Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome.

The September 9 for the first time at the San Carlo Sir Mark Elder, will lead the Neapolitan Massimo Orchestra for Scherzo fantastique, Op. 25cdi Josef Suk, Jeu de cartes by Igor Stravinsky and the Symphony n. 8 in G major, “English” (op. 88) by Antonín Dvořák.

The September 15 as part of the San Gennaro Project, the opportunity to listen to a rarity, The Cantata per San Gennaro of 1775, from Paschal Cafaro for solos, choir, organ and orchestra. He will conduct Pulcinella, one-act ballet with song by Igor Stravinsky (solo voices the mezzo-soprano Adriana Di Paola, the tenor, Giulio Pelligra and the baritone Dario Russo and the Symphony n. 4 in "Italian" A Major, op. 90 of Felix Mendelssohn- Bartholdy.

The billboard closes on October 29 James Gaffigan, for the first time on the podium of the San Carlo Orchestra. On the program Pelléas et Mélisande, op.80 by Gabriel Fauré, the Botticellian Triptych of Ottorino Respighi and the Symphony n. 41 in C major K 551 “Jupiter” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The Piano Festival of the Teatro di San Carlo

The Teatro di San Carlo launches a new Piano Festival, scheduled for spring, from 22 April to 5 May 2022. Seven appointments, the names of Daniel Barenboim is Yuja Wang, among the best known stars of international pianism, and again the extraordinary talent of Beatrice Rana, the very young Alexandra Dovgan, is Bertrand Chamayou, Rafal Blechacz is Benjamin Grosvenor.

For the opening concert on April 22 will be at the piano Daniel Barenboim.

The April 23 the very young will perform Alexandra Dovgan with music by Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, iL April 24 Beatrice Rana will play Chopin, Debussy and Stravinsky.

The April 28 it will be for the first time at San Carlo Yuja Wang.

Chamber music

Finally, a new cycle of 10 concerts of Chamber music which will see protagonists i Orchestra Professors of the Teatro di San Carlo. with one Sunday appointment a month, always at 6 pm.

The musical proposal includes popular pieces by authors loved by a wider audience, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georg Friedrich Händel, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert but also Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, just to name a few.
