Siena Cathedral Choir "Guido Chigi Saracini"“

Stable choral formation

The Choir of the Cathedral of Siena "Guido Chigi Saracini" was born in September 2016 thanks to the fruitful collaboration between the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena.
The artistic ensemble, composed of a variable number of singers from across Italy, combines liturgical service with the performance of concerts of high artistic value, fully embodying the dual title of Cathedral Choir, dedicated to Count Chigi Saracini, founder of the Siena Academy that bears his name. Each year, the choir prepares and performs a vast repertoire that encompasses the most beautiful and heartfelt works of the sacred choral tradition, performed in the context of the liturgical animation of the main solemn celebrations of Siena Cathedral, alongside works belonging to the international cultural and concert heritage. The aim is to disseminate and enhance choral production in Italy and abroad.

The choir is the protagonist of countless prestigious concerts both a cappella and with orchestra, ranging from Missa Brevis from Palestrina to Berliner Messe of Pärt, from Lux aeterna by Ligeti to Spem in alium of Tallis up to Stimmung by Stockhausen and Nights by Xenakis. The vocal ensemble has performed many works in world premiere, including Seven Prayers by Tigran Mansurian with the ORT- Orchestra della Toscana for the celebrations of the Millenary of San Miniato al Monte in 2018 and Six Studies on Dante's Inferno for countertenor by Giovanni Sollima for choir and orchestra, performed on June 10th as part of the 2021 Ravenna Festival under the direction of Kristjan Järvi. Beginning in 2021, the Siena Cathedral Choir "Guido Chigi Saracini" has been invited by the Sagra Musicale Umbra of Perugia to be the choir in residence for the 5th edition of the International Composition Competition for a work of sacred music, "Francesco Siciliani" Prize.
The Siena Cathedral Choir “Guido Chigi Saracini” is directed by Lorenzo Donati, a name of international excellence who, among other things, was a student in the composition courses at the Chigiana Academy.
