Contest

The competition was founded in 1947 by the famous Monza pianist Rina Sala Gallo in collaboration with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Today, the Competition is one of the most prestigious and international musical events in the city of Monza.

The XXVII edition of the Rina Sala Gallo International Piano Competition will take place between 29 September and 5 October 2024, at the Teatrino di Villa Reale and the Teatro Manzoni in Monza. The competition is open to pianists of any nationality born after 5 October 1993. The competition stages include a pre-selection and four preliminary rounds, from which three finalists will emerge.

The selected participants will be hosted free of charge with local families and will have access to a piano to practice. The registration fee is €75, and admitted candidates will have to complete registration with a further payment of €100. The public will be able to watch all phases of the competition and contribute to the awarding of a scholarship during the final.

The competition program includes varied repertoire for each phase, including pieces by Haydn, Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, and others, with the obligatory inclusion of a piece composed after 1950 in the third round. The final will see the contestants perform concerts by famous composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Chopin.
Prizes: The total prizes of the 27th Rina Sala Gallo International Piano Competition amount to €32,000, divided into various prizes, including the first prize of €15,000 "Città di Monza", the second of €8,000, and the third of €5,000 "Rotary Club Monza East and Rotary Club Monza West". Other awards include a scholarship of €2,000 for the Special Audience Prize, the "Massimo Galli" Prize for the production of a CD, the Chopin Prize of €1,000, and the Association Council Prize of €1,000 to the candidate youngest among the semi-finalists.

The Sala Gallo competition is now a historic competition, the oldest in Italy which has roots in the immediate post-war period, back in 1947, when the pianist Rina Sala Gallo, with the help of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, gave life to the project which from 1970 it became a biennial competition named after her. Internationally renowned pianists have emerged from the Sala Gallo competition. Just to name a few, winners of past editions of the Sala Gallo Competition have been Angela Hewitt, Luca Schieppati, Massimiliano Ferrati, Lorenzo Cossi, Sofya Gulyak, Maria Perrotta, Mateusz Borowiak.
