The “Maria Caniglia” International Singing Competition was established in Sulmona in 1984, to celebrate the famous soprano to whom the largest Theater in Abruzzo has been named since 2001.

The Competition, which has grown in level and notoriety over time, reaches its 36th Edition this year, a significant milestone, witness to the seriousness and commitment of the organizing Association.

Competitors from all over the world are given the opportunity to be heard and to be reported to the artistic directors of important Italian and European theaters. Over the years, the 'Maria Caniglia' has been a springboard for many singers who were then emerging talents, and who today are stars in many of the world's greatest opera houses: Desirèe Rancatore, Serena Farnocchia, Marina Rebeka, Luciano Ganci, Teresa Iervolino, Annunziata Vestri, Mariana Tarassova, Elena Prokina, Daniela Cappiello and many others.

Prestigious personalities from the world of opera including Cecilia Gasdia, Giulietta Simionato, Teresa Berganza, Madga Olivero, Antonietta Stella, Gianni Raimondi, Renato Bruson, Luciana Serra, June Anderson, Luis Alva, Jaume Aragall, Anita Cerquetti and many others.
