With Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, opera returns to the Lirico di Cagliari
A new staging by the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari for the reforming opera of melodrama, directed by the Greek George Petrou
Organized by: Teatro Lirico di Cagliari

Lyric Theater of Cagliari Presents

It will be the poignant story of Orpheus and Eurydice to mark the highly anticipated return of the opera al Opera Theater of Cagliari absent since last May.

The masterpiece of Christoph Willibald Gluck and the librettist Ranieri de 'Calzabigi, theatrical action in three acts, was performed for the first time at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October of 1762.

In spite of its courtly elegance, it is a breakthrough work, which marks the beginning of what is commonly known as "melodrama reform ", a reform that aimed to re-establish the canons of classical Greek tragedy and to restore value to the interpenetration between music and words.

With a very original aesthetic-musical rigor for the time, Calzabigi and Gluck pursued the unity of the drama, and proposed a more linear singing style, favorable to the communication of feelings and actions, pruning the work from secondary intrigues, decorativisms and excessive vocal virtuosity, eliminating in particular the arias with the 'from the beginning'not very functional to the performance of the theatrical action.

Orpheus and Eurydice achieved enormous success throughout Europe, and the famous aria "What will I do without Eurydice”Became hugely popular, a true 'hit' of the time.

The Teatro Lirico di Cagliari (where the title was missing since January 2010, when it was performed in concert form) is now proposing a new staging of the opera, at the debut the November 12 next with the musical direction of George Petrou, considered one of the most sensitive interpreters of the baroque and eighteenth-century repertoire.

With a Grammy Award nomination and winner of the Echo Klassik, the Athenian George Petrou, who will be in Cagliari for the first time, is a rising artist: musical director of theNational Symphony Orchestra of the Greek Radio from June 2020 and from this season artistic director of the prestigious Gottingen Handel Festival founded 101 years ago, it has recently enjoyed a lot of international success, including Traviata at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Charles the Bald by Porpora at the Bayreuth Baroque Festival, Polyphemus by Porpora at the Salzburg Festival, Orlando furious at the Teatro Real in Madrid and at the Theater an de Wien, Orpheus of Porpora in Martina Franca, Barber of Seville to Netherlands Reisopera, Alcina by Handel at the Athens Festival.

The direction and costumes of the new staging are entrusted to Nicola Berloffa (Cuneo, 1980), who has already worked in Cagliari as Luca Ronconi's assistant, the scenes are by Aurelio Colombo, the lights of Valerio Tiberi, the choreography of Luigia Frattaroli.

In the three roles of the opera they sing Victória Pitts alternating with Catherine Dellaere for the part of Orpheus, Theodora Raftis alternate with Francesca Sassu like Eurydice, while S.ilvia Frigato is Giulia Della Peruta they share the role of Love.

The reruns will be staged on November 13-14-16-17-19-20

It was thanks to Count Giacomo Durazzo (Genoa 1717 - Venice 1794), general director of the show at the Court of Empress Maria Teresa, that the meeting between Gluck (Erasbach 1714 - Vienna 1787) and Ranieri de 'Calzabigi (Livorno 1714 - Naples) took place 1795).
