Lyric Theater Foundation of Cagliari Presents

It opens with a rarity of the Italian twentieth century Opera and Ballet Season 2022 of the Lyric Theater of Cagliari: the January 28 (8.30 pm) will be performed for the first time in Italy in modern times Cecilia, sacred action in three episodes and four paintings by Licinio Refice (Patrica, 1883 - Rio de Janeiro, 1954) on a libretto by Emidio Mucci.

Cecilia is part of the precious series of inaugurations that the Lirico di Cagliari has dedicated to the music of the Italian twentieth century, The submerged bell in 2016 and The sleeping beauty in 2017, both of Respighi, Turandot of Busoni in 2018, Ball de 'Mozzi of Marinuzzi in 2020.

The work of Licinio Refice, to be considered a true masterpiece both for orchestral writing and for the plot, was performed for the first time on February 15, 1934 at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, starring Claudia Muzio, the most famous soprano of the moment . Among the few known subsequent executions we remember: in 1935 (with the direction of the same Refice) and then in 1949-1950 always at the Rome Opera, in 1953 at the San Carlo in Naples (with Renata Tebaldi as protagonist), in 1954 in Rio de Janeiro (with Renata Tebaldi as protagonist and in the presence of the composer who died during rehearsals), in 2008 at the Avenida Theater in Buenos Aires (with Adelaide Negri as protagonist), in 2013 (in concert form) in the Cathedral of Monte-Carlo (recorded on cd with Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni protagonist).

Cecilia will be represented in a new staging of the Lyric Theater of Cagliari directed by Leo Muscato (Martina Franca, 1973), recent winner of the “Franco Abbiati” Prize and already appreciated on the occasion of Nabucco by Verdi (Opera seasons 2012-2015) and by Beautiful sleeping in the woods by Respighi (Opera Season 2017), the scenes by Andrea Belli, the costumes of Margherita Baldoni, the lights of Alessandro Verazzi and the videos of Luca Attilii.

Driving theOrchestra and Chorus of the Lyric Theater of Cagliari, Giuseppe Grazioli (Milan, 1960), specialist director in the twentieth century repertoire, already applauded numerous times in Cagliari. The choirmaster is Giovanni Andreoli.
