Carlo Fuortes is the new Superintendent of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
The Minister of Culture Sangiuliano signed the appointment decree on 23 March
Carlo Fuortes has been appointed Superintendent of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino by the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano; the Minister signed the appointment decree on March 23, 2024, ratifying the proposal of the Steering Committee of the Tuscan Opera Foundation which met last March 5th.

Fuortes takes over the leadership of Maggio after about a year of administration entrusted to Onofrio Cutaia, who in a short time carried out important recovery work after the serious collapse of the previous management led since 2019 by Alexander Pereira. 

“I wish good luck to Superintendent Fuortes, who with his mandate is called to relaunch one of the major cultural institutions of the nation, restored thanks to the work of the extraordinary commissioner Onofrio Cutaia to whom I give credit, and to give prestige to its international vocation”, he declared the minister Sangiulian.

“I am happy and honored to be able to contribute in the role of Superintendent to the great history of this Theater – he commented Outside immediately after the appointment - which has enriched the musical heritage of our country since 1933. The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is one of the most prestigious institutions representing Italian cultural excellence in the world.”

In thanking Minister Sangiuliano, the president of the Theater and mayor of Florence Dario Nardella and the members of the Board of Directors for their trust, Fuortes announced his commitment "to working for a new cultural and artistic project, which can confirm the extraordinary role of this great theatre, through the artistic excellence of its programming but also thanks to its operational, economic and financial sustainability. I know I can count on two artistic companies, the Orchestra and the Choir, of absolute international value; under the guidance of Daniele Gatti, principal conductor to whom I am personally and professionally linked, and of maestro Zubin Mehta, conductor emeritus, one of the greatest conductors of all time".

The first important public event for the new Superintendent will be the inaugural ceremony of the 86th Fiorentino Musical May Festival scheduled for April 13th with the symphony concert directed by Daniele Gatti.

Born in Rome on 5 September 1959, Carlo Fuortes was CEO of Rai from 2021 to May 2023; Previously, his long career saw him as General Director of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome from 2002 to 2003, CEO of the Fondazione Musica per Roma (Auditorium Parco della Musica) from 2003 to 2015, Superintendent of the Teatro dell 'Opera di Roma from 2013 to 2021; Fuortes was also extraordinary commissioner of the Petruzzelli Theater in Bari (2012 – 2013) and director of administration of the Theater of (1998 – 2001).
