The Island of Capraia

Capraia is the third largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, with an area of 19.3 sq km. It is the only island of volcanic origin in the Archipelago, and was formed about 9 million years ago. About 8 km long (from Punta Teglia in the north to Punta dello Zenòbito in the south) and 4 wide, it has an area of 19.26 km² and a perimeter of about 30 km. It is 64 km from Livorno, 50 km from the Island of Elba and only 30 km from Corsica.
The island forms an autonomous municipality in the province of Livorno with a population of about 300 inhabitants. There are two inhabited centers that overlook the largest island inlet facing east: the nucleus of the port, a simple and pretty seaside village, and the town, the oldest village close to the fort of San Giorgio. The town has the typical fortress houses and is connected to the port by the only asphalted road about 800 meters long. Frequented by the oldest navigators and home to a Roman residential settlement, Capraia was also the subject of raids by Saracen and Turkish pirates. It will be in the 16th century the Genoese of Banco di San Giorgio to make it safer with the homonymous fortress and to equip it with a series of coastal towers. Modern history has instead seen the development of an agricultural penal colony, active from the second half of the nineteenth century until 1986, which occupied the northern portion of the island.
