Cinderella, or goodness in triumph, is a playful two-act drama of Gioachino Rossini on booklet by Jacopo Ferretti. The subject is taken from the famous fairy tale by Charles Perrault, Cendrillon (1697), but Ferretti also based himself on the opera librettos of Charles Guillaume Etienne (Cendrillon, 1810) and Francesco Fiorini (Agatina, or the rewarded virtue, 1814). Rossini composed the music in a very short time, just over three weeks, and the first performance took place on January 25, 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome. After an initially cold reception, La Cenerentola soon became one of Rossini's most overwhelming successes. “Rossini's Cenerentola - as stated in the presentation notes of the Teatro Comunale - is configured as a work of disguise and transformation, both in history and in musical motifs. The most miraculous transformation of all is, of course, the one to which the protagonist, Angelina, is subject: the naive girl who, when the curtain rises, in a world of comic opera characters gradually becomes a mature and regal woman.
