The Bologna Festival is an unmissable event. With surprising programming, innovative projects and a bold exploration of repertoires beyond traditional boundaries, as if to underline the festival's continuous evolution in the dialogue between the classical and the contemporary.

The Bologna Festival does not neglect the younger audience, dedicating particular attention to musical education with two annual initiatives: "Baby BoFe'“, a review of classical music for children, and “Log notes“, an educational project aimed at primary and secondary schools involving around 12,000 children.
The Bologna Festival inaugurates its 43rd edition on March 18, presenting Teodor Currentzis and the musicAeterna orchestra, who will debut in Bologna with Mozart's Requiem.

On March 24, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and violinist Janine Jansen will dedicate their performance to the music of Bach. This will be followed on April 9 by a performance by pianist Alexandre Kantorow, winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, focusing on compositions by Liszt and Brahms. On April 21, María Dueñas and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, under the direction of Paavo Järvi, will perform Bruch's First Concerto and Schubert's first two symphonies.

Bruce Liu will offer a recital on April 30 that includes Chopin's Second Sonata and compositions by Haydn, Beethoven, Prokofiev, and Kapustin. András Schiff, with his orchestra Cappella Andrea Barca, will perform on May 7th in two piano concerts by Mozart and the Symphony no. 99 by Haydn, followed by an event on May 31 featuring conductor Vladimir Jurowski and pianist Emanuel Ax in compositions by Weber, Schumann, and Beethoven.

The festival also includes the Prospettiva Vivaldi project from 20 to 23 May, with events ranging from concert-readings to meetings and screenings. Highlights include the concert-reading “The Vivaldi Affair” and a panel discussion entitled Vivaldi Renaissance.

Other initiatives include Classica in Sneakers, a format to introduce young people to classical music, and the Talenti review, which highlights young emerging artists.
There is more
Characterized by the presence of internationally renowned artists, the event stands out for the exclusivity of its programs and concert cycles. The festival is divided into various events: “Great Interpreters“, which explores the vast classical-romantic repertoire and symphonic-choral masterpieces; “Talents“, dedicated to the new promises of European concert music; And "The New the Old“, which proposes a dialogue between ancient music, performed according to philological criteria, and contemporary and twentieth-century works.
Under the guidance of Mario Messinis for 27 years, the artistic direction of the festival has explored new musical horizons, extending the programming beyond the boundaries of the traditional eighteenth-nineteenth century repertoire, to include ancient music and contemporary avant-garde, through specific projects.

In December 2019, the Board of Directors undertook a significant change by appointing Magdalene of Lisca Superintendent of Bologna Festival, giving her both administrative and artistic responsibilities. The leadership of the association is supported by Federico Stame, president, and by members belonging to the world of entrepreneurship and culture of the city.
