Bellini International Context 2023 | 3rd edition • Catania
There are over 30 events on the program in the traveling multidisciplinary exhibition promoted by the Sicilian Region in homage to the "Etna swan;
the festival unfolds in the most important places of Catania, with significant stops in Messina and Palermo

It goes on stage from 8 September to 6 October 2023 there third edition of the Bellini International Context, the relevant multidisciplinary review promoted by Sicilian region to pay homage to Vincenzo Bellini, for two centuries the universal ambassador of Sicilian cultural identity with its immortal melodies and the universal language of music.

In four weeks it is over 30 appointments scheduled, between works, symphony and chamber concerts, theatrical performances, interdisciplinary showsi, and again exhibitions, dating cultural, round tables.

Prominent events of the Bellini International Context 2023 are two new opera productions: The Puritans, on stage at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania with the direction of Fabrizio Maria Carminati and directed by Clear Muti, is Norm, staged at the Teatro di Messina, director Giuseppe Ratti and directed by Francesco Torrigiani. Other notable protagonists embellish the billboard, including singers Jessica Pratt, Dmitry Korchak, José Treatment, José Maria Lo Monaco is Caterina Sala.

The festival will deploy its extensive program in the most relevant places of Catania, the composer's hometown, with significant stops also in Messina is Palermo: in the city of Etna the events will take place at Massimo Bellini Theater and al Sangiorgi Theatre, also touching the Ursino Castle, Villa Bellini, the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the Palace of Culture and other sites.

As can be seen from the name, the festival is built around a multidisciplinary 'context', which in its varied and composite planning makes use of the participation of important musical and cultural institutions: Massimo Bellini Theater in Catania, Massimo Theater of Palermo, Messina Theatre, Symphony Orchestra Foundationto Sicilian, Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation, Archdiocese of Catania, University of Catania and Conservatives of Music “Vincenzo Bellini” by Catania and “Arcangelo Corelli” by Messina. Project manager of the BIC – Bellini International Context is Gianna Fratta, cultural operator as well as well-known orchestra conductor.

The program

Flagships of Bellini International Context 2023 it's two new opera productions, whose titles need no introduction: The Puritans will be staged at Massimo Bellini Theater of Catania the September 23, 188th anniversary of the composer's death (rhe replies on the 26th). He goes up to the podium Fabrizio Maria Carminati, leading the teams of the Etna regional opera body, Orchestra and Choir, the latter instructed by Louis Petrozziello. The direction is signed by Chiara Muti, which makes use of thethe scenography of Alexander Room and of the costumes of Thomas Lagattolla. The tenor in the vocal cast Dmitry Korchak (specialist in the difficult role of Lord Arturo Talbo), the soprano Catherine Room (Elvira), the baritone Christian Federici (Sir Riccardo Forth), bass Dario Russian (Sir Giorgio), the mezzo-soprano Laura Verrecchia (Henrietta of France).

And it can't be missed Norm, an absolute masterpiece that leads back to the top of the partnership that linked Bellini to the librettist and poet Felice Romani. The staging is scheduled on 27 and 29 September on the stageEAR Theater of Messina, which created the production in collaboration with the Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation. He directs Giuseppe Ratti, directed by Francesco Torrigiani, scenography by Francesca Cannavò and costumes by Lisa Rufini. The Orchestra of the Messina regional body will perform together with the “Francesco Cilea” Opera Choir, led by Bruno Tirotta. Performers on stage will be the soprano Klara Kolonits in the title role, the tenor Stephen Dry (Pollione), the bass Gabriel Sagona (Oroveso), the mezzo-soprano Alessia Nadin (Adalgisa).

International stars also enliven the symphony concerts: theSeptember 8 inaugurates the festival on Grand opera gala With the'Bellini Orchestra still conducted by Fabrizio Maria Carminati, artistic director of the theater; soprano soloists Caterina Sala and the tenor Dmitry Korchak, commit yourself to it The Puritans, and the mezzo-soprano José Maria Lo Monaco. To the Bellini pages – taken from The Capulets and the Montagues, The Pirate, The SleepwalkerThe foreigner, Adelson and Salvini, Beatrice di Tenda and naturally The Puritans – the overtures of two melodramas by his colleague and rival Giovanni Pacini will alternate, Sappho is The Livonian carpenter (8 September, Catania, Villa Bellini).

The soprano Jessica Pratt she is the star of Bellini Revolution, a project by Massimo Theater of Palermo, developed around the innovative - and therefore "revolutionary" - teaching of the Sicilian composer, selecting an anthology of arias and symphonies that retrace his creative arc, from his first work Adelson and Salvini to the Puritans precisely. The Massimo Palermo Orchestra will be conducted by Manuela Ranno (9 September, Catania, Villa Bellini).

The Foss -Sicilian Symphony Orchestra Foundation in turn offers a contribution of great interest, divided into two concerts distinct but connected to each other, to widely explore the affinities between the Catanian composer and the greats who followed or preceded him: a vast excursus that will range from Bellini to Leoncavallo, from Mascagni to Puccini, from Verdi to Giordano. The first date, Bellini & Friends will see theSicilian Symphony Orchestra guided by the wand of Federico Santi, soprano soloists Maria Tomassi and the famous tenor José Cura (15 September in Catania, Villa Bellini; 17 September in Palermo, Palazzo Steri); The second one, From Bellini onwards, will be directed by Gianluca He marched, with Alessandra Di Giorgio, soprano, Max Jota, tenor, Serban Vasile, baritone (22 September Catania, Villa Bellini 24 September Palermo, Piazza Ruggero Settimo).

The Teatro Massimo Bellini instead proposes theHomage from the Composers of Sicily to Vincenzo Bellini: the pieces inspired by the Maestro bear the signature of Joseph Emmanuele, Mario Garuti, Joe Schittino, Giovanni Ferrauto, Luciano Maria Serra, Matteo Musumeci and Elio Lo Presti, which presents an absolute first performance. On the podium Elizabeth Male. (6 October Catania, Sangiorgi Theatre).

Also on the bill are several works in which music dialogues with other artistic expressions and with modern technologies, including Confidences at the moon, show – concert by and with Angelo Campolo is video projections to care of Giulia Drago (Messina, Mu.Me- Regional Interdisciplinary Museum, 9, 10, 11 September).

In collaboration with the Archdiocese of Catania, a concert of rarely heard sacred music will resonate in the Cathedral of Sant'Agata: two youthful Bellini songs, Tecum Principium is Greetings Queen and the Funeral mass in memory of Bellini, composed by John Pacini in 1865 as a tribute to the fellow citizen who had passed away thirty years earlier. Pacini, as is well known, was in fact born in Catania, albeit passing through, during a tour of his parents, both opera singers, and spent his early childhood there. Epifanio Comis he will stand on the podium of the Symphony Orchestra of the Catania Conservatory, the institute of which he is director. The choir is that of the Bellini of Catania (27 September).

The busy program is completed by chamber concerts, first performances, multidisciplinary shows and video mapping.
