Alessandro Scarlatti Association of Naples
The Alessandro Scarlatti Association of Naples, founded in 1918, is the oldest musical association in the South, since 1948 it has been established as a non-profit organization and is registered in the Regional Register of High Culture Institutions of the Campania Region.


The first part of the 2021-22 Season includes eight concerts and runs from 21 October to 16 December.

L'Alessandro Scarlatti Association was founded in Naples in 1918 - initially with the aim of making known the ancient Italian music - da Emilia Gubitosi with Maria De Sanna, with the decisive contribution of the poet Salvatore Di Giacomo and of the musician and musicologist Giovanni Tebaldini. Emilia Gubitosi (Naples 1887 - 1972) was a prominent figure in the cultural panorama of the time, pianist, choir director, teacher and above all the first woman in Italy to achieve in 1906, with full marks and honors, the diploma in composition.

The Alessandro Scarlatti Association, one hundred years after its foundation, represents a pillar of Neapolitan musical life: it has trained entire generations in listening to music, also inventing highly successful innovative formats such as Ensemble Music Weeks. The creation of theAlessandro Scarlatti Orchestra, founded in 1949 within the activities of the Association, became part of the stable complexes of the Italian radio and television since 1956.

The Association, which over time has significantly expanded its activities, currently organizes a concert season of national importance and undertakes initiatives throughout Campania, reaffirming its fundamental role as a reference concert body for the Region and for the whole of Southern Italy.

The Scarlatti Association is also responsible for a capillary enhancement of many art places in Naples and Campania with the cycle 'Music and Art Places'and the Carthusian recovery of the regional organ heritage with the review'Historical organs of Campania', now in its 22nd edition in 2021.

The increased commitment of the Scarlatti Association for the enhancement of young talents, in particular those coming from the Conservatories of the South, with the proposal of laboratories with a professionalizing cut aimed at completing the training of students.

The isocial commitment with the programs of musical training activated in favor ofdisadvantaged childhood (Music and Society Project).

Conferences and publications complete the range of activities of the Association.


Between many big names hosted by the Alessandro Scarlatti Association over the course of over a century, are to be mentioned at least Arturo Toscanini in the years of the beginning of the activity, Wilhelm Backhaus is Edwin Fischer, the great ones soloists Rubinstein, Richter, Kempff, Starker, Tortelier, i complex then already famous Italian Quartet, Amadeus Quartet, Trieste Trio, i composers contemporaries Stockhausen, Ligeti, Petrassi, Berio. There were also numerous orchestras guests: Salzburg Mozarteum, London Mozart Players, Ensamble Kontraste, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, St. Martin - in the- Fields, The English Concert, Les Arts Florissants, Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia and of vocal complexes, including Wiener Sangerknaben is Wiener Motettenchor.

Still, Salvatore Accardo driving the Ensemble musical weeks, in which they participated on several occasions Dino Asciolla, Rocco Filippini, Pierre Amoyal, Victor Martin, Sylvie Gazeau, Alain Meunier, Christian Ivaldi, Régis Pasquier, Bruno Canino, Carlo Bruno, Mariana Sirbu, Franco Petracchi, Giorgio Zagnoni, Claus Kanngiesser, Antony Pay, Michele Campanella, Bruno Giuranna and many others.

In more recent years, they have been guests of the exhibition 'Music and places of art'the likes of Riccardo Muti with the La Scala Philharmonic, Gidon Kremer driving the Kremerata Baltica, the baroque group Les Arts Florissants directed by William Christie, just to name a few.

Other spearheads, the celebratory concerts for the 90 years of the Scarlatti Association which saw the performances of theMarijnsky Theater Orchestra of St. Petersburg directed by Valery Gergiev, from Ton Koopman with her Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, by Gidon Kremer with the Kremerata Baltica.


To celebrate the centenary of the Association, the big one was organized exhibition "Naples, uninterrupted music. 100 years of the Alessandro Scarlatti Association”, A project promoted by the Campania Region in collaboration with the regional museum complex. The exhibition, curated by Aldo Di Russo with installations and sets by Nicola Rubertelli, was hosted at Villa Pignatelli from 11 December 2019 until the early closure due to Covid.

The digital version of the exhibition offers an extensive and interesting navigation through multiple materials and aspects, presenting the 100 years of the Scarlatti Association embedded in the social and cultural history of Naples. Site:
