“ Season 2023 – 24 | Opera "
To the San Carlo Theater in Naples from the 20 to 29 June 2024 goes on stage Maria Stuarda of Gaetano Donizetti, the second piece of the three-year project dedicated to “Tudor trilogy” by the composer from Bergamo. After theAnna Bolena of last season and with Roberto Devereux, scheduled for 2024/25, the new staging of Maria Stuarda is created through a significant international co-production which together with the San Carlo Theater involves the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia.

The staging of the entire trilogy is entrusted to the Dutch director Jetske Mijnssen, the musical direction a Riccardo It fizzes, among the leading experts of this repertoire, musical director of the Donizetti Opera festival in Bergamo and director of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The South African star plays the protagonist in her role debut Pretty Yende, already applauded at the San Carlo and also known to the general public for having sung at the coronation of King Charles III; with her on stage, the Russian mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina in the role of the antagonist Elisabetta, Francis Demuro like Robert, Earl of Leicester, Carlo Lepore in the role of Giorgio Talbot, Chiara Polese like Anna Kennedy, and Sergio Vitale as Lord William Cecil.

Orchestra, Choir and Ballet they are those of San Carlo Theater; choirmaster is Fabrizio Cassi, the Corps de Ballet is directed by Clotilde Vayer.

The production, presented last year in Amsterdam, uses scenes from Ben Baur and the customs of Klaus Bruns; the lights are of Cor van den Brink, the choreography is curated by Lillian Stillwell, the dramaturgy from Luc Joosten.

Maria Stuart, a lyrical tragedy in two acts with a libretto by Giuseppe Bardari, is based on the drama of the same name by Friedrich Schiller. Composed in 1834, the work was originally commissioned for the San Carlo, where Donizetti himself was a director from 1822 to 1838; the problems with the Bourbon censors who resented the idea of a regicide on stage, and a furious argument between the two leading ladies led to an almost total remake of the work, which was staged with the title 'Buondelmonte'; Maria Stuarda finally made her debut at La Scala in Milan in 1835, protagonist Maria Malibran.
