“ Season 2023 +-24 | Opera "
The diptych that unites 'Bluebeard's Castle' from Béla Bartók is 'The human voice' from Francis Poulenc debuts at theater St Carlo of Naples, where it will be on stage from 24 to 30 May 2024 for four performances.

Produced byParis Opera and from Royal Theater of Madrid, the show is signed by the Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski, Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Biennale Teatro in 2021, for the first time at the Neapolitan Lirico. Edward Gardner returns to the podium to conduct the San Carlo Theater Orchestra.

The sets and costumes are by Małgorzata Szczęśniak, the dramaturgy of Christian Longchamp, the lights of Happy Ross, taken from Sofia Alexiadou; Denis Guégin sign the video, Claude Bardouil the choreography.

Bluebeard's Castle, one-act play by Bartók with a libretto by Béla Balázs, features protagonists John Relyea, in the role of the Duke, ed Elyna Garanča who will play Judith, his wife, for the first time. Rewritten in a psychological and symbolist key, the literary antecedent of the only work written by the Hungarian composer is twofold: the fairy tale The Blue Beard of Charles Perrault and the drama Ariane and Barbe Bleue of Maurice Maeterlinck.

Barbara Hannigan it is, instead, Elle (She), the nameless woman protagonist of the tragédie-lyrique of Francis Poulenc born from the play of the same name by Jean Cocteau. The monologue takes place on the telephone with Him, a silent role, on the other end: He interprets it Joseph Ciccarelli.

A hiatus of about fifty years separates the two works: Bartók composed Bluebeard's Castle in 1911, Poulenc wrote The Human Voice in 1958. The two works appear absolutely distant in terms of subject matter, language and context. Yet, in Warlikowski's rereading, they flow fluidly into each other, without interruption. They find a space for sharing in the primary role played by the characters absent on stage, in the solitude, oppression and restlessness of the deepest torments. «Yes, they are two worlds that are difficult to connect – comments the director Krzysztof Warlikowski -, two very modern stories of two women who are victims of their partners. I tried to build a bridge between the two by creating an installation with a single stage system, an exciting challenge because together, one after the other, the works become a single show".
