Teatro Regio di Torino Foundation Presents

“ Opera Season 2023 ”
To the Teatro Regio of Turin from 31 March to 14 April 2023 a show not to be missed will be staged:

IS The magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in the dreamlike vision of Suzanne Andrade is Barrie Kosky, installation that arrives for the first time in Turin. Mozart's imagery merges with the astonishing projections inspired by silent cinema, with which the performers interact on stage, creating an immersive experience that captivates audiences everywhere.

He climbs onto the podium Sesto Quatrini, at the helm ofOrchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Regio and two casts of young performers with an international profile. Choir Master is Andrea Secchi.

The opera, performed in the original German language, is represented in the staging of the Komische Oper in Berlin. The direction is resumed for the occasion by Tobias Ribitzki, the animations are taken care of by Paul Barritt, the idea is of «1927» (Suzanne Andrade and Paul Barritt), sets and costumes by da Esther Bialas.

In the role of Pamina they alternate Ekaterina Bakanova is Gabriela Legun; in Tamino's Joel Prieto is Giovanni Sala; Papageno is played by Alessio Arduini is Gurgen Baveyan; the Queen of the Night from Serena SaenzBlessed Ritter is Danae KontoraIn-Sung Sim it is Sarastro (besides the speaker and one voice); Amelie Hois it is Papagena. Rounding out the cast: Lucrezia DreiKsenia Chubunova is Margaret Hall (first, second and third lady), Thomas Cilluffo as Monostatos ed Enzo Peroni is Rocco Lia (first and second armiger). The three children are soloists in the children's choir, instructed by the maestro Claudio Fenoglio.

The magic Flute, masterpiece composed by Mozart in 1791 a few months after his death, it is one of the ten most famous operas in the world, and the most represented among those in the German language. Born for the popular audience of a theater on the outskirts of Vienna, Die Zauberflöte it unfolds along the fairy-tale and magical plot, but full of symbolic and initiatory (and probably Masonic) meanings.

In a fairy land, where it is difficult to distinguish good from evil, Prince Pamino gets lost and meets a funny character covered in feathers called Papageno. The two young men, protected by the magical powers of a flute and a music box and helped by two intrepid girls, Pamina and Papagena, will challenge obscure characters and learn to overcome their fears. They will also find love: two weddings will sanction a doubly happy ending.

At the debut of this very special staging, Barrie Kosky – theater director and Superintendent of the Komische Oper in Berlin - thus described his collaboration with the «1927» group of Suzanne Andrade and Paul Barritt in the conception of the show «With Suzanne and Paul I share a love for variety, vaudeville, music hall and similar forms of theatre, and of course for silent cinema. So our Papageno recalls Buster Keaton, Monostatos is a bit Nosferatu and Pamina has something of Louise Brooks in it. But it's more than just an homage to silent cinema; there are influences from very different fields. It is a combination of live entertainment and animation that generates a totally new art form. We evoke the world of dreams and nightmares with an aesthetic that recalls the universe of silent cinema». To this he added Paul Barrit (film maker, co-creator of «1927»: «We draw visual inspiration from many eras, from 18th century copper engravings to today's comics». And more Suzanne Andrade (theatre director, performer, co-creator of «1927»): «Our Magic Flute is a journey through different fantasy worlds». Again Barrie Kosky: «The tempo is dictated by the music, also – especially – in the dialogues, which we have condensed and transformed into silent film intertitles; the accompanying music we use is by Mozart, from his Piano Fantasies, this gives a consistent style and steady rhythm. It's a silent film by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, so to speak!»; says Paul Barrit: «It's a love story, told like a fairy tale».

In all evening performances, the public has the opportunity to enjoy a buffet dinner in the Foyer del Toro during the intermission: Opera buffet it can be purchased online for €27 or directly on the evening of the show, at the ticket office in the entrance foyer, for €30.

For the play  scheduled for Sunday April 2 at 15, the  Children's Club.
