“ Programming September – December 2023 ”
To the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino the symphonic cycle continues Beethoven, Honegger and Europe designed by Daniele Gatti, which after the success of the first three events returns to the podium in Sala Mehta il 17 and 18 November 2023 (8pm) for the fourth and penultimate concert of the event; to join him, Andrea Lucchesini piano soloist.

Beethoven, Honegger and Europe

“I wanted to compose this cycle – he explained Daniele Gatti – with the 5 symphonies of Honegger, with the 5 concerts for piano and orchestra by Beethoven and five composers from 5 schools: the Russian, the Italian, the English, the German, and the French without taking into account a “red thread vertical” that represented a common denominator between the programs. However, I took into account and respected the distinctive feature of the Maggio and its artistic proposal and therefore I thought of a path that instead had a horizontal line: nothing connects Honegger to Beethoven, this is clear, but alongside a proposal of very rare symphonies - I'm thinking of the First, Fourth and Fifth which I also never conducted - we thought of offering a sort of "counterbalance" to the public by performing Beethoven's five piano concertos - which are more familiar - with five Italian soloists. To complete the program we have chosen the compositions of five authors from different schools, proposing in addition to well-known compositions such as that of Stravinsky (The Firebird, suite) in the first concert, or Fontane di Roma by Respighi in the second appointment, others less performed; therefore in the third we will perform a piece by John Ireland, an English composer of the twentieth century less known to the public unlike Britten or Elgar, in the fourth concert we will close the evening with a virtuosic, strong and powerful piece by Hindemith, Konzertmusik for strings and brass; in the last concert on 6 and 7 December there will be Debussy, one of my favorite French authors. I am curious to see the public's reaction and I am confident that it will be appreciated because it is in line with the most authentic story of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.”
