Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Foundation Presents

“ Programming September – December 2023 ”
A few weeks before 2024, the year in which the centenary of the disappearance of Giacomo Puccini, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino returns to stage one of the most loved and performed works by the composer from Lucca, La Boheme.

From 14 to 29 November 2023 there are six performances scheduled: the show will be performed again in the acclaimed staging of Bruno Ravella first performed in 201, seen again in 2019/20 and now revived by Stefania Grazioli.

He made his debut on the podium in May Giacomo Sagripanti, leading the Orchestra, of Choir he was born in Children's choir of the Florentine Opera, while the stage will be animated by a young and very talented singing company, with two casts alternating in the six performances, on the bill on 14, 16, 22 and 29 November at 8 pm and on November 19th and 25th at 15:30.

In the role of Mimi, Mariangela Sicily – who returns to May after the success achieved in Rigoletto in October 2021 – alternating with Aida Pascu; Galeano Salas is Kang Wang they will play the painter Rodolfo; Elisa Balbo is Aleksandrina Mihaylova, both making their debut at the Maggio, they will take on the role of Musetta, while two talents trained at the Accademia del Maggio will give voice to the painter Marcello, Min Kim is Qianming Dou..William Hernandez is Matthew Torcaso they share the part of the musician Schaunard, Francis Leo Iplays the philosopher Colline, David Piva the double role of Benoît and Alcindoro.

The staging of the Teatro del Maggio uses scenes from Tiziano Santi and of the costumes of Angela Giulia Toso; the lights, taken from Emanuele Agliati, I'm from DM Wood. The Maestro del Coro del Maggio is Lorenzo Fratini, the master of the children's choir of the Accademia del Maggio is Will be Matteucci.

The teacher comments Giacomo Sagripanti: “Debuting in May and doing it with La bohème excites me very much; we work with two real casts, young and talented who, for a work like this, can really be a winning weapon. I tried to give an interpretation as close as possible to what Giacomo Puccini actually was as a composer: an open musician who was attentive to what was happening artistically around him and in other countries, capable of 'getting infected' by what was French culture or German and then modulated this artistic development in his scores. La bohème is an opera that I like to define as "colorful", with a profoundly refined orchestration.

I also believe that, on a narrative level, Bohème is by far the 'youngest' opera written by Puccini, and I have above all tried to highlight this in the numerous moments in which, thanks to the music or what we see on stage, we notice what are the characteristics of youth, such as impulsiveness or being almost always carried away by emotions. Death is also present, of course, as the ending of the work is tragic. But even in this case the tragedy of Mimì's death is told with an almost seraphic calm; this makes the moment of 'detachment' from the protagonist almost part of the natural flow of what we have seen, even if we who observe would never want to separate from Mimì. I believe that Bohème teaches us not only to experience certain emotions, but also and above all to reflect ourselves in them.”
