Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Foundation Presents

To the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, in the new Sala Zubin Mehta, from 4th to 8th February a rarity of Luigi Cherubini, The husband of three, and the husband of none, the only comic opera by the great Florentine musician written for Venice.

The playful drama in two acts with a libretto by Filippo Livigni he made his debut with success at the Teatro San Samuele in November 1783. Cherubini (Florence 1760 - Paris 1842), at the time in his early twenties, tried his hand at a genre that was unusual for him, creating a divertissement in line with the tradition of the Neapolitan school full of musical verve and panache. The action is animated by the usual swirl of deceptions, misunderstandings, jokes and disguises for the use and consumption of characters who seem to come out of a canvas of the commedia dell'arte: the baronesses Donna Lisetta and Donna Rosa, the captain Don Martino, Don Pistacchio barone of Lago Secco, Don Simone his uncle, the commoners Bettina and Folletto. Everything revolves around the unsuccessful marriage of Don Pistacchio, betrothed to Donna Rosa who, misled by Don Martino, Lisetta's brother, courts both Donna Lisetta and the commoner Bettina, only to retrace his steps regretfully. But 'those who want nothing too tightly', says an ancient proverb, and Don Pistacchio, who courts as many as three women, in the end will not be able to impalmarize even one.

The husband of three, and the husband of none, will be staged in the new Maggio staging signed for the direction of Cesare Lievi, a welcome return after Donizetti's Linda di Chamounix last September. On the podium he will go up Diego Fasolis in his debut at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

The cast consists of Sara Blanch, Donna Lisetta, Ruzil Gatin who plays Don Martino, Fabio Capitanucci in the role of Don Pistacchio, Arianna Vendittelli in that of Donna Rosa, Alessio Arduini like Don Simone, Benedetta Torre like Bettina and Giulio Mastrototaro like Elf. Scenes and costumes are curated by Luigi Perego, the lights are of Luigi Saccomandi.

The opera, which is now being performed for the first time in Florence, does not appear to have circulated after its Venetian debut. It was revived over a century later, in 1926 in Dresden, with a new production in German and a rewritten dramaturgy, under the title of "Don Pistacchio, der dreifach Verlobte". Another unconvincing reworking was presented in Weimar in 2000. It was only with the 2005 staging at the XXXI Martina Franca Festival that the first real representation in modern times could be witnessed, thanks to the critical edition of the score prepared by Helen Geyer, on which the new layout of the Maggio Fiorentino is also based.
