Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Foundation

L' 87th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival presents three works, including two new installations, Salome of Richard Strauss is The Young Lord (The Young Lord) of Hans Werner Henze, work proposed for the first time in Italy in the original language; third title, Aida of Giuseppe Verdi.

Also on the programme is a special event dedicated to the dance, with Roberto Bolle protagonist in “Caravaggio” of Mauro Bigonzetti;

the symphonic programming is rich and prestigious, with ten concerts directed by illustrious wands, from Zubin Mehta to Daniele Gatti is Antonio Pappano.

Programming motto, “The tradition of the new” – the Maggio Festival, in fact, since its foundation in 1933, has been a stage for the new, presenting new lyrical compositions, anticipating the Italian premiere of musical works by famous foreign composers, and experimenting with new contaminations between live entertainment and the visual arts: demonstrating, in short, how opera is able to intercept contemporary culture and Der junge Lord (The Young Lord) by Hans Werner Henze, becomes an expression of it.

THE WORKS

Salome by Richard Strauss
April 13 – 27, 2025

The 87th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival opens on April 13 (three subsequent performances: April 16, 23, 27), with the staging of Salome by Richard Strauss, which marks two important debuts at the Maggio: that of Alexander Soddy on the podium and, at the direction, of Emma Dante. Alexander Soddy maestro who is also entrusted with a concert in the Festival and a further opera in the season, the Macbeth, has achieved success in London, Paris, Vienna, New York, is part of that group of artists who are clearly on the rise abroad and that the Maggio dutifully decides to propose to its audience. Emma Dante finally arrives in our theater and promises "a very imaginative and visionary production just as this opera is visionary". Among the main interpreters Nikolai Schukoff, Anna Maria Chiuri, Allison Oakes, Iain Paterson, Eric Fennell.

Der Junge Lord by Hans Werner Henze
May 25 – 31, 2025

On May 25th, with repeats on May 28th and 31st, The Young Lord (The Young Lord) brilliant and satirical work by Hans Werner Henze from 1964 directed by Markus Stenz and directed by Daniel Menghini. This opera perfectly embodies the mission of the Maggio, that is to program and propose titles that are not found, or only rarely, in the program of other theaters. In this specific case it will be the first time that this opera has been staged in the original language in Italy after the first and only time it was scheduled in Rome in 1965 in Italian. Among the performers Levent Bakirci, Matteo Falcier, Caterina Dellaere, Andreas Mattersberger, Marina Comparato, Eleonora Bellocci, Antonio Mandrillo.

Aida by Giuseppe Verdi
June 19 – July 1, 2025

The Verdi Festival closes Aida (the first one is on June 19th and the repeats on July 25th, 28th and 1st) one of the most famous titles of the great repertoire, conducted by Zubin Mehta, staged however with the strong and harsh direction of Damiano Michieletto (in the production of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich) which sets it not in Egypt but in a bombed-out gymnasium serving as a shelter for war refugees. The main performers are Olga Maslova, SeokJong Baek, Agnieszka Rehlis, Amartuvshin Enkhbat/Leon Kim, Simon Lim, Manuel Fuentes.
