72. Malatesta Music Festival in Rimini
From 8 September to 18 December at the Galli Theater the historic review, one of the oldest musical events in Italy
The Malatesta Music Festival 2021: among the oldest classical music reviews in Italy, the prestigious event crosses the finish line of 72nd edition.

In just over three months, from 8 September to 18 December, will host prestigious teams, famous conductors and leading soloists.

The entire billboard will unfold in the magnificent space of the Galli Theater, recently returned to the public after a long story of reconstructions and restorations.

There are 7 major symphonic concerts scheduled, 5 chamber ones, completed by an evening of dance, a day dedicated to Amintore Galli, an event between cinema and music around Hans Werner Henze, and a series of 9 concert preparation meetings for young spectators.

First-class names will give life to the programming, as is the tradition of the Malatesta Music Festival: after the inauguration in homage to Dante with Manlio Benzi on the podium of the Toscanini Philharmonic, will be guests Valery Gergiev with the Mariinsky Orchestra, the Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, Jordi Savall, Riccardo Chailly, Cecilia Bartoli, Riccardo Muti.

Opens theSeptember 8 in the sign of Dante the 72nd edition of the Malatesta Music Festival, with Manlio Benzi driving the Toscanini Philharmonic and the participation of Choir of the Municipal Theater of Piacenza. Scheduled for the Dante Symphonie by Franz Liszt, visionary score dedicated to Richard Wagner who for the occasion will take on a multimedia guise predicted by the composer himself with the projection of the drawings by Bonaventura Genelli, elaborated for a grandiose diorama which, however, was never made.

The September 14 will return to Rimini Valery Gergiev, constant and prestigious presence at the Malatesta Music Festival. The great Russian master - who already participated in the reopening of the Galli Theater involving the Mariinsky Theater complexes - will be on the podium of his Marinsky Orchestra with the Suite from the ballet 'Romeo and Juliet' by Sergei Prokofiev and a masterpiece by Franz Schubert, the symphony in C major, 'La Grande'.

The 1st October will take the stageOrchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia under the wand of the talented Alpesh Chauhan, a young and successful English director of Indian origins. The program, dedicated to the most mature season of the European musical nineteenth century, includes the Fourth Symphony by Johannes Brahms and the Cello Concerto by Antonin Dvořák, the thirty-year-old Spanish soloist Pablo Ferrández, already very popular.

L'October 11th appointment with an undisputed master of ancient music like Jordi Savall and the musicians of his ensemble The Concert des Nations for an original interpretation of the sounds Beethovenian. Savall will direct the Seventh and Eighth Symphony continuing his interpretative journey in the works of the great composer, following the times, articulations, dynamics and mastery of period instruments.

L'November 8 still a name of high prestige with Riccardo Chailly who will direct the La Scala Philharmonic  -and will be in Rimini for the first time as musical director of the famous team - in a program that combines Felix's 'Scottish' Symphony Mendelssohn to the Pastoral of Beethoven.

The November 17, the exceptional presence of a bel canto star like Cecilia Bartoli, returning to Rimini confirming the artist's particular association with the city since the reopening of the Galli Theater. Cecilia Bartoli also on this occasion will be accompanied by Les Musiciens du Prince, directed by Gianluca Capuano. The ensemble, founded by the singer, brings together some of the best early music instrumentalists in the world. An itinerary in the vocal and instrumental music of Händel and other composers inspired by the dizzying virtuosity of Farinelli, star of the eighteenth century opera to which Cecilia Bartoli pays a spectacular tribute.

The December 18 for the great closing concert of the 72. Malatesta Music Festival the return of Riccardo Muti With the'Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, two years after the exceptional appearance on the podium of the Galli Theater for the inauguration of the 70th edition of the review. The program will be dedicated to the performance in concert form of one of Giuseppe Verdi's most loved works, the Nabucco.


A great one will also be staged on the Rimini stage dance evening inserted in the celebrations for the Dante's 700th anniversary: the November 25 the famous étoile Svetlana Zacharova with Patrick De Bana, Mikhail Lobukhin, Denis Rodkin, Denis Savin and the Bolshoi Ballet Soloists of Moscow proposes an evening entitled Love and dedicated to Francesca da Rimini.


A fundamental part of the program is then the wide and varied cycle dedicated to chamber music, divided into five appointments and opened by a récital by Claudia Berti the 21 September. The eclectic pianist will be involved in a program that runs through the sound horizons marked by contemporary composers, including Max Richter, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman.

The September 29 continue with The Soloists of the Marchigiana Philharmonic led by the cellist Alberto Casadei will propose songs by Boccherini, Mendelssohn, Chopin and of the same Casadei.

The November 20 debut in Rimini of Sitkovetsky Trio, an ensemble that quickly established itself on the international scene. Formed by the violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, by the pianist Wu Qian and the cellist Isang Enders, the Trio dedicates the program to the most heated romantic season with music by Schumann, Arensky, Tchaikovsky.

The November 28 the scene will be of the a cappella vocal ensemble The Swingles, seven young singers gathered in a lineup in continuity with the original group founded in Paris at the beginning of the last 60s. Today based in London, The Swingles are loved all over the world for the versatility of approach to a vast repertoire.

The chamber music program closes with December 12 Sara Alexander Romanovsky. The acclaimed pianist's récital juxtaposes the famous Sonata 'Patetica' d Beethoven to a transcription of the virtuoso Ciaccona by Bach and the 9 studies of the Tableaux op. 39 of Rachmaninov.


All the concerts will take place at the Galli Theater at 9 pm, except for the récital by Alexander Romanovsky scheduled at 5 pm.

The Malatesta Music Festival

Among the oldest events in Italy, the Malatesta Music Festival was born in the summer of 1950 when, the then Azienda di Soggiorno, commissioned Carlo Alberto Cappelli, at the time superintendent of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, to conceive and organize a cycle of symphonic concerts with the aim of extending the Rimini tourist season.

Since then, the Malatesta Music Festival has hosted the most prestigious conductors, soloists and orchestras of the international musical firmament, delivering to the local community, also for the numbers and the work done on the formation of the public, one of the most precious civil and cultural heritages and a prestigious event cultural, among the longest-lived in Italy.
